I hope you’re sitting down for this… I’m overweight, just like 69% of Americans. I wouldn’t consider myself among the 36% of American adults who are obese, but I have quite a few extra pounds I could do without. As the photographer for Underwear Nation, I am constantly looking at gorgeous men with perfect bodies. I work with male models for a living. It’s my job to focus on their six-pack abs and tiny waists, both in person during photo shoots and daily while editing, blogging and social-media-ing.
Don’t get me wrong… I’m not complaining about my job. I get paid to do what many gay men do on a daily basis anyway: look at hot, nearly naked men. And I’m certainly not going to stand on a pulpit and demand the male modeling world use “real men” or complain that we big men aren’t represented. Please! There is a reason they’re called models, because they are the model of the male form. And this is one status quo I think we’re all pretty damn okay with.
But, do underwear companies discriminate against fat guys? The sad truth is that, of the brands we carry here at Underwear Nation, I can fit into only a few. Some of the brands restrict their product sizes to only small, medium, and large. In many cases, even the size XL is a little too tight. Overweight? Out of luck. No fancy undies for you!
